Spare c
oolant in the backseat is always a good sign.

My commute is 5 miles one way , and the only place I could beat the piss out of one is at the START of the commute (read: before it's warmed up) , so no.
No I would not.

The automatic transmission is the deal killer for me.

ac needs a charge....
*runs away*
eh tbh.. i probably would trust it... my commute is only a few miles... if it dies i’ll just walk the rest of the way to work

Auto + rotary + over 100k miles = low compression
Plus its overheating due to the fan? Bullshit, I see your coolant jug in the back.
Plus new rear tires because BEAT ON.

Beater-money RX8
and
primary mode of transportation RX8
should be mutually exclusive.

I wouldn’t trust a high mile rotary beater even in a short commute

Apex seals say no.

How much do you like walking?

I really want to find one with a good body and a bad engine. Can’t be too hard to rebuild. Then, as long as you take care of it, the car should be reliable. But, it seems like ever car with a bad motor, also has a shit exterior / interior.

Yes. I did it. BUT...1) check the compression, and 2) don’t pay over $2,000.
BTW, you can have a real compression test done for $$ , but you can also just try to restart while hot. If it can still do it reliably with the stock battery, you’re good.

That’s an ‘05 . If it has the original engine, I’d be completely shocked. The key is to find out how many miles are on the current engine.

It probably had its original replaced around 60k and the reman is starting to shit the bed... or already has.

That’s quite possible, likely even. However, it really depends a lot on when the new engine was made or rebuilt (BTW, I learned you can still buy a crate engine for these). The later engines fixed a lot of the seal problems. In my case, it took me a long time to get enough miles on my original engine, and by the time it went , the ones available were much better than than the ‘04 vintage I started with.

When I worked for a Mazda dealer it was either reman, or wait for us to make a reman.

My Mazda dealer only offered me the choice of different reman engines when my seals went last year . I ended up talking to Rotary Performance in nearby Garland who told me they could order me a crate engine instead of a reman. I was surprised.

Well this was under warranty... I assume yours wasn’t?

Right. My Mazda guys, who I trusted btw, gave me options for reman engines sourced from different vendors. They gave me no inclination that they knew of new engines still available. That’s why I was surprised. I thought the dealer would know about this if anyone did.
I actually did have my fir st engine replaced under warranty only a year after I bought the car new. I came in with a stall from a cold start (my wife moved the car and turned if off cold before I could stop her), and the service rep told me there were compression issues and he got the engine replaced. So, really, when I say the original engine, I’m lying.

The dealers only know what the OEMs offer, and recommend. In fact, dealers are somewhat FORCED to use only OEM parts and suppliers. Wh en I left the Mazda dealer I was at they were starting to really crack down on dealers that didn’t use a certain percentage of Mazda parts vs. aftermarket.

Makes sense. Also, just in the last couple of years, my Mazda dealer was bought by a family who really loves the cars. They spend their days in the dealership interacting with customers. The father was sharing stuff he learned with me in the dealer pipeline like an excited kid, and the son races rotaries. They kind of make you feel like they’re just glad you came in to talk about cars with them, and oh btw, we’re glad to sell you one too if you’re in the market.

If it were a manual, yes. The automatics were less reliable because they didn’t rev as high(not joking).
